RingCentral call queue max wait time: the limits, and how to extend callbacks past them

Last reviewed October 4, 2026. RingCentral details are as of October 2026 and link to RingCentral’s own pages.

As of October 2026, RingCentral’s RingEX documentation gives the maximum caller wait time in a call queue as 15 minutes in its call-queue overview, and “up to 25 minutes” in its call-handling settings article.[1][2] RingCentral says Support can extend the standard limit, and Call Queues Booster licenses raise it to 30 minutes.[3] When a caller reaches the limit, RingEX sends them where you choose, depending on your plan: voicemail, an extension, an external number or AI Receptionist.[2][4]

RingCentral’s own callback has a timeout whose length it doesn’t document. QueueCallback extends callbacks past RingCentral’s queue limits by re-queuing them automatically. Below: the documented limits, where to change the setting, what happens at the limit, and how QueueCallback goes past it.

RingCentral’s two articles disagree on the standard figure, so check the Maximum caller wait time dropdown in your own Admin Portal. In January 2026 a RingCentral group product manager confirmed on RingCentral’s Ideas forum that “the max caller wait time in queue can be increased up to 30 mins when Call Queues Booster is purchased.” That forum request for longer queue waits has 49 votes and was still marked New in October 2026.[5] RingCentral doesn’t say whether Support can go beyond the Booster’s 30 minutes.

How to change the maximum wait time

From RingCentral’s call-handling article:[2]

  1. Sign in to the Admin Portal.
  2. Click the Phone System tab.
  3. Click the Groups dropdown, then Call Queues.
  4. Click the call queue you want to change, then click Call Handling & Members.
  5. Click the Wait settings tab.
  6. Set Maximum caller wait time in queue.
  7. Under When maximum wait time is reached, send caller to, choose a destination.
  8. Click Save.

To go past the highest value in the dropdown, RingCentral says to contact Support.[2] Setting up QueueCallback? Our setup guide walks through the same Wait settings tab.

What happens when a caller hits the limit

RingEX sends the caller to the destination you chose under When maximum wait time is reached: AI Receptionist, Voicemail, Extension or External Number.[2] AI Receptionist needs an AI Receptionist subscription. RingCentral’s US pricing page lists RingEX Core with “Basic” call queues, and lists routing “to specific extensions or numbers based on criteria like max wait time expired or max callers in queue” under Advanced and the Customer Engagement Bundles, so the destinations you see can depend on your plan.[4]

A separate setting, When queue is full, decides what happens to new callers once the queue reaches its caller limit: AI Receptionist, voicemail, a heavy-call-volume message and disconnect, an extension or an external number.[2]

Why callers can reach voicemail before the limit

The setting When members are available, but no members answer or all members are busy or unavailable can send callers to AI Receptionist, voicemail, an extension or an external number before the maximum wait. To keep them waiting, choose Wait for Primary members, or Wait for Primary and Overflow Members.[2]

Do overflow queues add time?

No. RingCentral says that with overflow, “callers wait in the queue for primary and overflow members until they are either answered, or the maximum wait time is reached.” Overflow adds people who can answer, from up to three overflow queues, but not extra time.[2] RingCentral’s US pricing page lists overflow help (“use available agents to help answer calls from busy call queues”) under RingEX Advanced and the Customer Engagement Bundles, so Core accounts may need to upgrade to use it.[4]

Does RingCentral’s callback outlast the limit?

RingCentral’s own callback is part of Call Queues Booster (Call Queues Booster cost and limits).[6] RingCentral counts a pending callback as unsuccessful when “no agents become available before the callback timeout expires,” and doesn’t document how long that timeout is.[7] One user on RingCentral’s Ideas forum reports that “the callback window is tied to the same wait time before routing to voicemail,” so a callback no agent reaches in time “is missed and requires manual follow-up”;[8] another says callbacks not reached “within the maximum wait time of 30 minutes” end as a missed call notification.[9]

How QueueCallback extends callbacks past the limit

QueueCallback extends callbacks past RingCentral’s queue limits:

  1. The caller chooses a callback (from an IVR menu option, a key press while holding, or after a wait), confirms or changes their callback number, and hangs up.
  2. QueueCallback places a live placeholder call in your RingCentral queue to hold a spot for them.
  3. Callbacks follow your queue’s overflow settings: when a callback reaches your queue’s wait limit, QueueCallback automatically re-queues it, so it keeps waiting past the limit.
  4. When an agent picks up the placeholder, they hear “This is a queued callback from” the callback number, press a key, and QueueCallback calls the customer.

For how it compares with RingCentral’s own callback, see RingCentral callback limitations.

RingEX and RingCX are different products

This page covers RingEX, RingCentral’s business phone system. RingCX is RingCentral’s separate AI contact-center product, priced from $65 per user per month billed annually as of October 2026,[11] with its own queue event settings and callback options.[12] Search results often mix the two. RingCX queue settings don’t apply to RingEX call queues.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum wait time in a RingCentral call queue?

As of October 2026, RingCentral's RingEX documentation gives 15 minutes in its call-queue overview and up to 25 minutes in its call-handling settings article, and says Support can extend it. With Call Queues Booster licenses or the Customer Engagement Bundle, the maximum caller wait time goes up to 30 minutes.

Can I make RingCentral callers wait longer than 15 minutes?

Yes, within RingCentral's limits. RingCentral says to contact Support to extend the standard maximum, and Call Queues Booster licenses raise it to 30 minutes, as of October 2026. RingCentral doesn't say whether Support can go beyond the Booster's 30 minutes.

Where is the maximum wait time setting in RingCentral?

In the Admin Portal, go to Phone System, then Groups, then Call Queues. Pick the queue, click Call Handling & Members, open the Wait settings tab, set Maximum caller wait time in queue, and click Save.

What happens when a caller reaches the maximum wait time?

RingEX sends the caller to the destination you choose under When maximum wait time is reached: AI Receptionist, Voicemail, an Extension or an External Number. The options can depend on your RingEX plan, and AI Receptionist needs its own subscription.

Why do callers go to voicemail before the maximum wait time?

Check the setting When members are available, but no members answer or all members are busy or unavailable. If it sends calls to voicemail, an extension or an external number, callers can leave the queue before the maximum wait. Choose Wait for Primary members, or Wait for Primary and Overflow Members, to keep them waiting.

How many callers can wait in a RingCentral call queue?

RingCentral documents up to 25 callers waiting in a standard queue, which Support can raise, and up to 50 with Call Queues Booster licenses, as of October 2026. The When queue is full setting decides what happens to new callers after that.

Do overflow queues extend the maximum wait time?

No. RingCentral says callers wait for primary and overflow members until they're answered or the maximum wait time is reached. Overflow adds people who can answer, from up to three overflow queues, but not extra time (as of October 2026). RingCentral's US pricing page lists overflow help under RingEX Advanced and the Customer Engagement Bundles.

Does RingCentral's callback last longer than the queue's maximum wait?

RingCentral doesn't document the length of its callback timeout. It counts a callback as unsuccessful when no agents become available before the callback timeout expires, and users on RingCentral's Ideas forum report the callback window is tied to the queue's wait time before voicemail.

How long can a callback wait with QueueCallback?

Past your queue's wait limit, often for hours. When a callback reaches the limit, QueueCallback automatically re-queues it, and callbacks follow your queue's overflow settings. By default a callback re-queues 3 times; you can set it as high as 10. For example, a queue with a 60-minute wait that overflows to a second 60-minute queue, with QueueCallback re-queuing every 2 hours up to 10 times, can keep a callback open for most of a day.

Is RingCX's queue timeout the same setting?

No. RingCX is RingCentral's separate contact-center product, with its own queue event settings. This page covers RingEX call queues, which you set in the RingEX Admin Portal.

Extend callbacks past your queue’s limits

QueueCallback is $100/month per queue, month-to-month, with no per-agent or per-caller fees. Callers choose their callback number, and callbacks automatically re-queue past your queue’s limits.
